About

Christine Brennan was born on May 14, 1958, in Toledo, Ohio. She pursued her higher education at Northwestern University, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism. Her career in sports journalism began in 1981 at the Miami Herald, where she made history as the newspaper’s first female sports reporter. Following this, in 1985, she joined The Washington Post, becoming the first woman to cover the Washington Redskins beat. Her early career also included covering the Miami Hurricanes football team, which led to her first book, “The Miracle of Miami.”

Brennan became a national sports columnist for USA Today in 1997, a position she continues to hold. Throughout her career, she has consistently been a prominent voice on significant sports issues and has served as a commentator for ABC News, CNN, PBS NewsHour, and National Public Radio. She has covered every Olympic Games, both summer and winter, since the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. A key milestone in her career includes her 2002 USA Today column on Augusta National Golf Club, which initiated a national discussion about the club’s membership policies. She also notably broke the news of the pairs figure skating scandal at the 2002 Winter Olympics and the Russian judging scandal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Demonstrating a strong commitment to advocating for women in sports media, Brennan was elected the first president of the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM) in 1988. She established AWSM’s scholarship-internship program, which has supported numerous female journalism students. She is also a New York Times best-selling author, having penned eight books on sports, including “Inside Edge,” which Sports Illustrated recognized as one of the top 100 sports books of all time in 2002. More recently, in 2025, she released “On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports,” which debuted at No. 2 on the New York Times bestseller list. Her contributions to sports journalism were recognized with the 2020 Red Smith Award.
