Nyadak “Duckie” Thot was born on October 23, 1995, in Melbourne, Australia. Her parents were South Sudanese refugees who settled in Australia, and she is the first of her seven siblings to be born there. Early in her life, Thot’s schoolmates and teachers had difficulty pronouncing her birth name, leading her to adopt the nickname “Duckie.” She completed her education at Maranatha Christian School, graduating in 2013. Thot’s introduction to the modeling industry came through her sister, Nikki Perkins, who was also a model and YouTube personality. This familial connection inspired Thot to participate in Season 8 of Australia’s Next Top Model in 2013, where she advanced to third place.
After her appearance on Australia’s Next Top Model, Thot began her professional modeling career in Australia, including walking for David Jones in 2016. However, she encountered limited opportunities for models of color within Australia’s fashion industry. This led her to move to Brooklyn, New York, seeking more diverse and substantial career prospects. In New York, she secured representation with New York Model Management. Her career gained significant momentum when Kanye West’s team approached her, leading to her participation in the Yeezy Spring/Summer 2017 show, which marked her international catwalk debut. Subsequently, Thot became known for her role as a face of Fenty Beauty and played the lead role in the Alice in Wonderland-inspired 2018 Pirelli Calendar.
Since 2018, Thot has served as a global ambassador for L’Oréal Paris. She has been featured in campaigns for notable brands such as Fenty x Puma, Moschino, Balmain, and Oscar de la Renta. In 2018, she debuted in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Thot also appeared on the cover art for CHIC’s album “It’s About Time,” released in September 2018. Her career progressed further in January 2022 when Sports Illustrated Swimsuit announced her as a rookie. Thot has used her platform to advocate for diversity and inclusion within the fashion industry, emphasizing the need for more diverse talent in creative and decision-making roles, not just as models.
