Ciaran Hinds

Ciarán Hinds was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on February 9, 1953. He was one of five children and the only son in his family. His father, a doctor, initially hoped Hinds would follow in his professional footsteps. However, his mother, Moya, an amateur actress, significantly influenced his decision to pursue an acting career. Although he initially enrolled to study Law at Queen’s University Belfast, he soon left to train in acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), completing his studies in 1975. His stage career began at the Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre in 1976, where he performed as a pantomime horse in “Cinderella.” He remained with the company for several years and took on lead roles in productions such as “Arsenic and Old Lace” and “Faust.” His stage work extended to collaborations with The Field Day Company and multiple world tours, including playing the title role in “Richard III” with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Hinds made his film debut in John Boorman’s “Excalibur” in 1981, which featured a notable cast including Liam Neeson and Patrick Stewart. His film and television career has since seen him portray a range of iconic characters. He played Mr. Rochester in “Jane Eyre” (1997) and Captain Wentworth in “Persuasion” (1995), roles that significantly increased his recognition. Hinds is known for his commitment to privacy in his personal life, maintaining a long-term relationship with French-Vietnamese actress Hélène Patarot, with whom he has a daughter and resides in Paris. He has consistently been in high demand, recognized for his professional acting in numerous productions.

Over the course of his career, Hinds has worked on many notable projects. He appeared in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” (2005) and played Grand Pabbie in Disney’s animated film “Frozen” (2013) and its sequel “Frozen II” (2019). He also portrayed Julius Caesar in the HBO series “Rome” and Mance Rayder in “Game of Thrones.” In 2021, he received critical acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, for his role in Kenneth Branagh’s film “Belfast.”
