Colby Ray Covington was born on February 22, 1988, in Clovis, California. His family relocated to Oregon when he was eight years old. Exposed to wrestling early through his father, who wrestled for the Oregon Institute of Technology and Southern Oregon University, Covington developed a strong foundation in the sport. He excelled at Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon, where he lettered all four years and secured the 171 lb state championship in 2006. His collegiate wrestling journey included a successful stint at Iowa Central Community College, where he won the 2007 165 lb national junior college wrestling title with an undefeated 34–0 record as a freshman. He later transferred to Oregon State University, earning NCAA Division I All-American honors and becoming a two-time Pac-10 Conference champion at 174-pounds.
Covington transitioned into mixed martial arts after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2011. He was recruited by Dan Lambert to American Top Team to enhance the gym’s wrestling talent. Beginning his professional MMA career, he quickly amassed a 5–0 record before joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2014. His UFC debut on August 23, 2014, saw him secure a TKO victory against Anying Wang. Throughout his career, he has showcased a wrestling-heavy style, often utilizing takedowns and ground-and-pound, complemented by a high-volume striking approach from a southpaw stance. A significant milestone in his career was winning the Interim UFC Welterweight Championship on June 9, 2018, at UFC 225, after a unanimous decision victory over Rafael dos Anjos.
His career has been marked by notable fights and achievements within the UFC, including two “Fight of the Night” bonuses against Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal. Covington holds records for most significant strikes landed (179) and attempted (515), as well as most total strikes attempted (541) in a UFC Welterweight bout. He has also achieved the second-most takedowns landed (70) and third-most control time (2:05:05) in the UFC Welterweight division’s history. Despite recent losses, including a doctor stoppage against Joaquin Buckley in December 2024 and two championship bouts against Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards, Covington remains a prominent and recognizable figure in the sport, known for his unique fighting style and outspoken personality.
