Leigh Daniel Avidan was born on March 14, 1979, in Springfield, New Jersey. He pursued advertising at Boston University. Avidan began his musical journey in late 2002, joining the indie rock band The Northern Hues in Philadelphia. As their lead singer and lyricist, he contributed to their self-titled EP, released on December 14, 2004, and a live track from July 16, 2005. Following The Northern Hues’ dissolution in mid-2005 due to creative differences, Avidan co-founded the Brooklyn-based alternative rock duo Skyhill in 2006 with Peter Lennox. Skyhill released “Run With the Hunted” on May 16, 2007, and later reunited for the standalone single “Firefly” in 2015, as well as a new album, “Out in the Moonlight,” released on October 13, 2023.
Avidan’s career took a significant turn in 2009 when he formed the musical comedy duo Ninja Sex Party with Brian Wecht. Performing as “Danny Sexbang,” Avidan crafted a comedic persona that, alongside Wecht’s “Ninja Brian,” garnered popularity through music videos and live performances. The duo released multiple albums that charted on Billboard, including “NSFW” (2011), “Strawberries and Cream” (2013), and “Attitude City” (2015). In 2013, Avidan also joined the popular YouTube channel Game Grumps as a co-host with Arin Hanson, expanding his reach as an internet personality. The dynamic between Avidan and Hanson revitalized the show, drawing new audiences and contributing to its professional growth. Additionally, he collaborated with Wecht and Hanson to form the rap-based comedy music trio Starbomb, releasing several video game-themed parody albums that also achieved Billboard chart success.
