Dan Castellaneta

Daniel Louis Castellaneta was born on October 29, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois. He developed a talent for impressions at a young age, leading his mother to enroll him in acting classes at 16. He later attended Northern Illinois University, where he studied art education with aspirations of becoming an art teacher. During his time at NIU, he honed his voice-acting skills through a radio show called “The Ron Petke and His Dead Uncle Show” and explored improvisational theater, showcasing a natural aptitude for material creation.

After graduating in 1979, Castellaneta pursued acting, taking improvisation classes where he met his future wife, Deb Lacusta. He joined The Second City, a renowned improvisational theatre in Chicago, in 1983, remaining there until 1987. During this period, he also engaged in voice-over work for various radio stations. A pivotal moment in his early career came when he auditioned for “The Tracey Ullman Show.” His ability to move Tracey Ullman to tears with a performance about a blind man aspiring to be a comedian secured his place on the show. This led to his most recognized role as Homer Simpson in the animated shorts that premiered on the show, eventually leading to “The Simpsons” series.

Castellaneta’s career expanded significantly with “The Simpsons,” providing voices for numerous characters beyond Homer, including Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Barney Gumble, and Groundskeeper Willie. His ability to craft distinct voices for these characters has contributed to the show’s enduring success. He has won multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for his work on the series in 1992, 1993, 2004, and 2009. Beyond “The Simpsons,” Castellaneta has held voice roles in “Futurama,” “Hey Arnold!,” “Darkwing Duck,” and live-action roles in shows like “Friends” and “How I Met Your Mother.” He has also ventured into writing and producing, contributing to “The Simpsons” as a writer for several episodes and a consulting producer.
