About

James Brian Mark Purefoy was born on June 3, 1964, in Taunton, Somerset, England. After leaving school at 16, he held various jobs before returning to college to pursue his A-Levels, where he discovered acting. He subsequently attended the Central School of Speech and Drama. During his final year, he was recruited by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) to play Ferdinand in “The Tempest,” leading to a two-year tenure with the company. His time at the RSC involved performances in eight productions, including significant roles like Edgar in “King Lear” and Malcolm in “Macbeth,” under the direction of Adrian Noble, Roger Michell, and Gene Saks.

Purefoy’s career developed with a balance between theater and television roles. On stage, he worked with notable directors and actors in productions such as “Women of Troy” at the Gate, “Death of a Salesman” at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, and “Hamlet” at Bristol Old Vic. He tackled diverse television parts, ranging from a psychopathic rapist in BBC1’s “Calling the Shots” (1993) to the sophisticated Nick Jenkins in Channel 4’s “A Dance to the Music of Time” (1997). This deliberate choice allowed him to avoid typecasting and explore a range of characters. His early film credits include Jedd Wainwright in “Feast of July” (1995), Brendan in “Bedrooms and Hallways” (1998), and Tom Bertram in “Mansfield Park” (1999).

His career progression also saw him take on prominent roles in major productions. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Mark Antony in the HBO/BBC series “Rome” (2005–2007). He also starred as college professor-turned-serial killer Joe Carroll in “The Following” (2013-2015) and Hap Collins in the Sundance series “Hap and Leonard” (2016-2018). More recently, he featured as Laurens Bancroft in Netflix’s “Altered Carbon” (2018) and Lord Phillipe de Clermont in the AMC/Netflix series “A Discovery of Witches” (2021-2022). Purefoy has consistently chosen varied roles, demonstrating adaptability across genres and mediums.
