Peter Gallagher

Peter Killian Gallagher, born on August 19, 1955, in New York City, New York, began his acting journey after graduating from Tufts University. There, he honed his skills in theater, participating in productions like Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” and singing with the all-male a cappella group the Beelzebubs. His early career included Broadway appearances, notably in “Grease” as Danny Zuko in 1978 and starring alongside Glenn Close in Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thing,” an experience that earned him the Clarence Derwent Awards for Most Promising Male in 1984. Gallagher made his debut in feature films in Taylor Hackford’s “The Idolmaker” in 1980.

Gallagher achieved wider recognition with his role in Steven Soderbergh’s film “sex, lies, and videotape” in 1989. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he built a diverse filmography, appearing in notable films such as “The Player” (1992), “While You Were Sleeping” (1995) playing Peter Callaghan, and “American Beauty” (1999) as Buddy Kane, for which he received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. His television career gained significant momentum starring as Sandy Cohen in “The O.C.” from 2003 to 2007, a role that became a cultural touchstone and earned him nominations for the Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Parental Unit.

Beyond his iconic role in “The O.C.”, Gallagher has maintained a consistent presence in television with recurring roles as Deputy Chief William Dodds on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2014–2019), Stacey Koons on “Californication” (2009), Arthur Campbell on “Covert Affairs” (2010–2014), and Nick Skolka on “Grace and Frankie” (2017–2022). He also showcased his musical talent in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” (2020–2021) as Mitch Clarke, a role that involved singing. His career also includes significant stage work, such as playing Sky Masterson in the 1992 Broadway revival of “Guys and Dolls” and Oscar Jaffe in “On the Twentieth Century” in 2015, demonstrating his versatility across mediums. He is also set to return to Broadway in 2024 for “Left on Tenth.”
