D’Angelo Russell, born on February 23, 1996, in Louisville, Kentucky, embarked on his basketball journey early, leading to a distinguished collegiate career at Ohio State. As a freshman in 2014-15, Russell made a significant impact, averaging 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. His notable achievements included a triple-double against Rutgers and leading Ohio State to an overtime victory in the NCAA Tournament against VCU. He earned widespread recognition, being named a consensus first-team All-American, Jerry West Award winner, First-team All-Big Ten, and Big Ten Freshman of the Year, affirming his status as a top prospect for the NBA draft.
Russell’s professional career began when he was selected second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 NBA draft. During his rookie season, he demonstrated his potential by leading the Lakers in steals per game and all rookies in steals per game, also becoming the youngest player to hit 130 three-pointers in a season, earning him NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors. His tenure with the Lakers included career-high scoring performances, such as a 39-point game against the Brooklyn Nets in 2016 and a 40-point game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017. He then moved to the Brooklyn Nets in 2017, where he received his first NBA All-Star selection in 2019, further solidifying his standing as a prominent guard in the league.
Following his All-Star year with the Nets, Russell had stints with the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he continued to showcase his offensive skills, including a career-high 52 points with the Warriors. In 2023, he returned to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played a key role in the team winning the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament in 2023. Russell continued to set franchise records during his second tenure with the Lakers, including breaking the single-season record for three-pointers made in 2024. His career has been marked by significant scoring and playmaking contributions across multiple NBA teams, culminating in his current role with the Dallas Mavericks, where he signed a two-year, $13 million contract in 2025.
