D’Angelo Russell earned widespread recognition as a consensus first-team All-American, Jerry West Award winner, First-team All-Big Ten, and Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2015 following a remarkable collegiate season. Selected second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 NBA draft, Russell quickly made an impact, leading all rookies in steals per game during his debut season and becoming the youngest player to hit 130 three-pointers in a season, securing NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors in 2016. His initial tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers saw significant scoring performances, including a career-high 39 points against the Brooklyn Nets in 2016 and a 40-point game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017.
