About

Darrell Currie was born in Glasgow in 1982 and grew up in Bearsden. He is the grandson of singer Mary Lee and his brother, Adrian, is an actor. Currie received his education at the High School of Glasgow and later earned a degree in business and economics from the University of Manchester. During his youth, he played rugby and trained with the Sale Sharks. Currie began his media career as a teenager, working as an afternoon runner for Radio Clyde, which provided his initial entry into the industry. Before joining BT Sport, he held positions at several broadcasting corporations, including BBC Scotland and CNN International, steadily building his experience in sports reporting and journalism.

His career significantly progressed with ESPN, where he served as the network’s SPFL reporter and contributed to ESPN USA’s Premier League coverage. He also acted as a reporter for major international football events, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012. Currie later became BT Sport’s lead SPFL presenter, frequently hosting broadcasts alongside notable guests such as Chris Sutton, Stephen Craigan, Ally McCoist, and Kevin Thomson. He also presented UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League coverage and occasionally filled in for Jake Humphrey on BT’s Premier League shows. Currently, Currie is a presenter and touchline reporter for TNT Sports, covering both English and Scottish football, and remains part of the ESPN football coverage team. He also works on Scottish Cup coverage for Premier Sports/Viaplay. In September 2022, Currie experienced a sudden and severe illness during a live Champions League broadcast, which led to a significant career interruption and a personal medical journey.

In 2019, Currie gained notable attention for his on-pitch interview with Eden Hazard, where Hazard admitted he was leaving Chelsea following their Europa League triumph. This demonstrated Currie’s capability in securing significant sports scoops. Despite facing a life-changing illness that has kept him off live television since September 2022, Currie has continued to work behind the scenes as a consultant for TNT Sports, assisting the production team and conducting remote interviews with footballers, such as Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. This period has involved extensive medical investigations and personal challenges, highlighting his resilience and determination to remain connected to his profession.
