Professor David Begg is a transport policy expert and the Chief Executive of Transport Times. Over the years, he has served on the boards for many of Britain’s major transport agencies and providers, including Transport for London, Heathrow Airport Holdings and First Group, and has been a leading voice in the country’s future transport strategy.
Begg began his career as a lecturer in Economics at Edinburgh Napier University, and served as chairman of the Transport Committee on first Lothian Regional Council and subsequently Edinburgh City Council. He was later Professor and Director of the Centre for Transport Policy at Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University, and has continued his links with academic institutions including as a visiting professor in sustainable transport at Plymouth University.
Begg has previously served as non-executive chairman of the EAMS Group, and as a board member of both Transport for London and Transport for Greater Manchester. He was the chairman of Tube Lines, and was a former non-executive board member of First Group, one of the world’s largest public transport companies, operating 20% of the UK’s local bus services and several rail franchises.
Today, Begg is a member of the International Strategic Advisory Committee at Cubic Transportation Systems, the company behind many public transport payment systems globally including London’s Oyster and New York’s OMNY. He is a non-executive board member of Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited, which operates Heathrow Airport. He has advised the UK government on strategy for such projects as the A14 Cambridge roads study and the High Speed Rail programme, and he led the Heathrow Winter Resilience Enquiry. As publisher of Transport Times, Begg is responsible for one of the transport industry’s leading information resources and event organisers.
