David Koechner

David Michael Koechner was born on August 24, 1962, in Tipton, Missouri. His ancestry is German, Irish, and English, and his father operated a turkey coop manufacturing business. Koechner pursued improvisational comedy, studying at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic under Del Close before joining The Second City comedy troupe, from which he graduated in 1994. In 1995, he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live” for a year-long tenure. Following his time on SNL, Koechner continued to develop his craft as a sketch regular on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in the mid-1990s.

Koechner moved to Los Angeles in 1997, where he began securing roles in various film and television comedies. His early film appearances included roles in “Wag the Dog,” “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” and “Man on the Moon.” A partnership formed with comedian Dave ‘Gruber’ Allen during the filming of the 1999 country music mockumentary “Dill Scallion.” Together, they formed the live musical comedy act, “The Naked Trucker and T-Bones Show,” which gained popularity in Hollywood clubs and eventually led to a sketch comedy series on Comedy Central in 2007.

Koechner’s career saw a significant turning point with his role as Champ Kind in the 2004 comedy “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” This led to more prominent supporting roles in films such as “Talladega Nights,” “Thank You for Smoking,” “Waiting,” “Semi-Pro,” “The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard,” and “Extract.” He also gained recognition for his recurring role as Todd Packer on NBC’s “The Office.” In 2013, he reprised his role as Champ Kind in “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.” More recently, Koechner has undertaken dramatic roles, such as in the 2016 film “Priceless,” which explores human trafficking, and he continues to perform stand-up comedy and engage in various acting and voice-over projects, including providing the voice of Dick Reynolds on “American Dad!”
