About

David Américo Ortiz Arias was born on November 18, 1975, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He signed with the Seattle Mariners in 1992, at age 17, and began his professional career as David Arias, playing in their minor league system. Ortiz joined the Minnesota Twins organization in 1996 and made his MLB debut in 1997. During his time with the Twins until 2002, he navigated injuries and sought consistent playing time, steadily improving his performance. His time in Minnesota culminated in 2002 with career highs of 20 home runs and 75 RBIs, contributing to the team’s postseason appearance. However, he was released by the Twins as a cost-cutting measure, creating a pivotal turning point in his career.

In 2003, Ortiz signed with the Boston Red Sox, a move that would redefine his career and the team’s history. He quickly became a central figure, earning the nickname “Big Papi” and establishing himself as a clutch hitter. Over 14 seasons with the Red Sox, Ortiz led the team to three World Series championships in 2004, 2007, and 2013, ending an 86-year drought for the franchise. His individual accolades include 10 All-Star selections, 7 Silver Slugger Awards, and the 2013 World Series MVP. He retired in 2016 with impressive career statistics, including 541 home runs and 1,768 RBIs. In 2022, Ortiz was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot, solidifying his legacy as one of baseball’s all-time greats.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Ortiz has also engaged in analytical work for MLB on Fox and pursued various business ventures. He founded the David Ortiz Children’s Fund in 2007, demonstrating a commitment to philanthropy. Despite facing personal challenges, including a severe shooting incident in 2019 and a legal dispute in 2020, Ortiz has maintained his public presence and continued his work, launching a cannabis line in 2022. His career path reflects a transition from a promising but underutilized talent to a celebrated athlete, recognized for both his athletic prowess and his community contributions.
