Robert Lee “Trey” Flowers III was born on August 16, 1993, in Huntsville, Alabama. He attended Columbia High School in Huntsville, where he played both football and basketball. He was rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and initially committed to Georgia Tech before changing his commitment to the University of Arkansas. During his collegiate career with the Arkansas Razorbacks from 2011 to 2014, Flowers demonstrated consistent performance, playing in all 13 games as a true freshman and starting all 13 as a sophomore. He ended his college career leading the team in tackles for loss and sacks in his final season, with career totals including 190 tackles, 47.5 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, and four forced fumbles.
Flowers was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round (101st overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft. After an injury-shortened rookie season, he had a breakout year in 2016, leading the Patriots in sacks with 7 and contributing significantly to their Super Bowl LI victory with 2.5 sacks in the game. He continued to be a key defensive player for the Patriots, helping them secure another Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl LIII in 2019. Following his successful tenure with the Patriots, Flowers signed a five-year, $90 million deal with the Detroit Lions in March 2019. He played for the Lions through the 2021 season, and later joined the Miami Dolphins in 2022 and had a brief second stint with the Patriots in 2023.
Throughout his professional career, Flowers has accumulated 31.5 career sacks and 10 forced fumbles. Beyond his on-field achievements, he has been recognized for his community involvement, including being nominated for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. His career highlights include two Super Bowl championships (LI, LIII) and being named to the New England Patriots All-2010s Team. He has also engaged in public speaking, sharing his experiences and insights.
