Deepika Padukone was born on January 5, 1986, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was raised in Bangalore, India. The daughter of former professional badminton player Prakash Padukone, she pursued a career in badminton at a national level during her teenage years. However, she ultimately shifted her focus to fashion modeling, gaining recognition through a television commercial for Liril soap and appearing in the 2006 Kingfisher Calendar. Her visibility in a Himesh Reshammiya music video led to film offers, and after training at Anupam Kher’s film academy, she made her acting debut in the Kannada film “Aishwarya” (2006).
Padukone’s significant breakthrough came with her Bollywood debut in Farah Khan’s “Om Shanti Om” (2007), where she starred in a dual role opposite Shah Rukh Khan, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Following a period of varied success, her career saw a turning point with the romantic comedy “Cocktail” (2012), which garnered critical acclaim for her performance. She solidified her position with several commercially successful films in 2013, including “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” “Chennai Express,” and “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela,” for which she received her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Further accolades came for her roles in “Piku” (2015) and “Padmaavat” (2018), and she made her Hollywood debut in “XXX: Return of Xander Cage” (2017).
Beyond her acting career, Padukone is actively involved in social initiatives. She founded The Live Love Laugh Foundation in 2015 to raise awareness about mental health in India, an effort recognized with the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award in 2018. Through her company, Ka Productions, she has produced films like “Chhapaak” (2020) and “83” (2021). She also maintains various business ventures, including a self-care brand 82°E and investments in startups, alongside high-profile brand endorsements for leading global and Indian brands.
