About

Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan was born on December 8, 1976, in West Berlin, West Germany, to British parents. His mother, Maureen, was a nurse, and his father, Austin Monaghan, was a science teacher of Irish descent. The family frequently moved across Germany before settling in Heaton Moor, Stockport, England, when Dominic was around eleven years old. He attended St Anne’s Roman Catholic High School and Aquinas College, where he focused on English literature, drama, and geography. His early interest in acting led him to the Manchester Youth Theatre, where he was discovered for his first significant role.

Monaghan’s career began with television work, most notably as Hetty Wainthropp’s sidekick, Geoffrey Shawcross, in the British drama series “Hetty Wainthropp Investigates” from 1996 to 1998. He gained international recognition for his portrayal of Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy (2001–2003). Following this success, he became widely known for his role as Charlie Pace on the ABC television drama “Lost,” appearing in 65 episodes from 2004 to 2010. His filmography also includes roles in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (2009) as Chris Bradley and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” (2019) as Beaumont Kin. Beyond acting, Monaghan has hosted the nature program “Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan” (2012–2016), showcasing his passion for wildlife and the environment.

Throughout his career, Monaghan has demonstrated versatility by taking on various acting roles and expanding into production, often focusing on projects that align with his personal interests, such as nature and environmental issues. He has collaborated on writing projects and co-hosts “The Friendship Onion” podcast with fellow “Lord of the Rings” castmate Billy Boyd, discussing their experiences and engaging with fans. His work has earned him several accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for “Lost” and Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Acting Ensemble for “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
