Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan was born on December 8, 1976, in West Berlin, West Germany, to British parents. His mother, Maureen, was a nurse, and his father, Austin Monaghan, was a science teacher of Irish descent. The family frequently moved across Germany before settling in Heaton Moor, Stockport, England, when Dominic was around eleven years old. He attended St Anne’s Roman Catholic High School and Aquinas College, where he focused on English literature, drama, and geography. His early interest in acting led him to the Manchester Youth Theatre, where he was discovered for his first significant role.
Monaghan’s career began with television work, most notably as Hetty Wainthropp’s sidekick, Geoffrey Shawcross, in the British drama series “Hetty Wainthropp Investigates” from 1996 to 1998. He gained international recognition for his portrayal of Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy (2001–2003). Following this success, he became widely known for his role as Charlie Pace on the ABC television drama “Lost,” appearing in 65 episodes from 2004 to 2010.
