Dominique Ropion was born in Paris in 1955 and developed an early interest in scent, reportedly smelling everything around him. He pursued formal training at the Roure Bertrand Dupont perfumery school in Grasse, an institution recognized for its rigorous curriculum. Following his education, Ropion began his career at Roure Bertrand laboratories, where he collaborated with Frédéric Malle. Over the years, Ropion has contributed to numerous fragrances for major brands, including Christian Dior, Thierry Mugler, Lancôme, Givenchy, Issey Miyake, Yves Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, and The Body Shop. In 2000, he joined International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF), where he continues his work as a perfumer, creating a diverse portfolio of scents. His creations are characterized by their balanced and precise olfactory structures, often featuring bold ingredient dosages combined with subtle accords.
Ropion’s career has been marked by significant industry recognition. In 2008, he received the Cosmetic Valley’s International Fragrance Prize, also known as the Prix François Coty. He was awarded the Cosmetique Magazine Oscar in 2010. Further accolades include being named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2012, an honor that acknowledges significant contributions to the arts. In 2018, Ropion was granted the esteemed title of Master Perfumer, affirming his status as a leading figure in the fragrance world. His work encompasses a wide range of popular and critically acclaimed perfumes, such as Givenchy Ysatis, Givenchy Amarige, Kenzo Jungle L’Elephant, Calvin Klein Euphoria, Thierry Mugler Alien, Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb, and Lancôme La Vie Est Belle. One of his most notable creations is Portrait of a Lady for Frédéric Malle, developed in collaboration with Malle, which is widely considered a masterpiece in the fragrance industry. Ropion’s dedication and approach to perfumery have cemented his reputation globally.
