Christine Nagel

Christine Nagel, born on October 7, 1959, in Geneva, Switzerland, to an Italian mother and Swiss father, has established herself as a leading figure in the world of perfumery. Her journey into this field began with a background in organic chemistry, a less traditional path compared to many of her predecessors. She initially pursued studies in medicine but found her true calling in chemistry at the University of Geneva, which subsequently led her to the fragrance industry. Nagel’s early exposure to scents, from her mother’s talc powder to her grandmother’s freshly pressed fabrics, cultivated a deep sensitivity to odors from a young age. This unique foundation, merging scientific understanding with a keen sense of smell, set the stage for her innovative approach to fragrance creation.

Nagel commenced her professional career in the research department at Firmenich, a Swiss fragrance firm. Here, she was captivated by the emotional impact of perfumes, prompting her desire to become a perfumer. Despite initial resistance due to her untraditional background, she transitioned to chromatography, analyzing fragrances at a molecular level with her highly developed sense of smell. Unable to advance her perfumery aspirations within Firmenich, Nagel independently moved to Italy, where she quickly secured 60% of the country’s perfume contracts, including work for prominent brands like Fendi and Versace. Her career expanded significantly upon her relocation to Paris in 1997, where she gained recognition for creating successful fragrances across various styles.

Her career includes notable achievements such as the co-creation of Narciso Rodriguez for Her (2003) and Miss Dior Chérie (2005). She also made significant contributions to Jo Malone London, developing 47 perfumes, including the acclaimed Wood Sage & Sea Salt (2014) and English Pear & Freesia (2010). In 2014, Nagel joined Hermès, becoming the sole in-house perfumer and Director of Olfactive Creations for Hermès Parfums in 2016. This appointment marked her as only the second woman to hold such a prestigious in-house perfumer role at a major luxury brand. Her work at Hermès includes Galop (2016), Twilly (2017), Eau des Merveilles Bleue (2017), Eau de Rhubarbe Écarlate (2016), and Eau de Citron Noir (2018). She also spent a decade developing a new chypre perfume for Hermès, released in September 2024, demonstrating her commitment to intricate and long-term projects. Nagel’s unique neurological condition, synesthesia, where she “sees and feels scents,” further shapes her distinctive creative process.
