Don Darryl Rivera was born in Seattle, Washington, and is a proud Filipino American. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from Cornish College of the Arts. Rivera’s career began with performances at various regional theaters across the United States. These venues include The Guthrie Theater, The 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, The Children’s Theatre Company, and The Shakespeare Theatre Company, where he developed his skills as an actor.
Rivera gained significant recognition for originating the role of Iago in Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway. He has continued in this role for over a decade, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024. During his tenure on Broadway, he has often worn traditional Barongs on red carpets to represent his Filipino heritage. His stage credits also include an Off-Broadway appearance in “Promenade” in 2019, where he played the Soldier/Driver.
Beyond acting, Rivera has contributed to the performing arts as a playwright and composer. In 2011, he co-wrote the book for “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” a musical which received two Seattle Times Footlight Awards. He further collaborated as a co-composer and co-book writer for “Adventures With Spot” in 2013, based on Eric Hill’s books. Rivera has also appeared in television series such as “Only Murders in the Building” (2023), “Hazbin Hotel” (2019–2024), and “Let the Right One In” (2022). Throughout his career, he has earned multiple accolades, including three Gregory Award nominations, winning two in 2009 and 2017 while being nominated in 2013.
