Clingan led his high school team to a Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division II state championship in 2022. During his junior year, he maintained averages of 27.3 points, 17.2 rebounds, and 5.8 blocks per game, earning him the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year award. He repeated this honor in his senior year, averaging 30.3 points, 18.4 rebounds, and 6.2 blocks per game. On July 2, 2021, Clingan committed to play college basketball for the UConn Huskies. His mother, Stacey Porrini Clingan, also played basketball at Bristol Central and the University of Maine, setting school records. Donovan wears number 32 in her honor.
Clingan began his college career at UConn as a backup center in his freshman season. He was recognized for his performance by being named to the Big East Conference All-Freshman team at the end of the regular season. In 2023, he contributed to the Huskies’ national championship win, scoring four points, three rebounds, one block, and two steals in the final game. Despite being considered a strong prospect for the 2023 NBA draft, Clingan chose to return to UConn for his sophomore season, where he became the starting center. He suffered a foot injury in December 2023 but returned to play in January 2024.
On April 12, 2024, Clingan declared for the 2024 NBA draft. He was selected with the seventh overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers.
