Christian James McCollum, born on September 19, 1991, in Canton, Ohio, cemented his foundation in basketball at GlenOak High School. Despite an initially undersized physique at 5’2″ as a freshman, McCollum’s consistent dedication to refining his skills enabled a significant growth spurt and an impressive high school career. He established himself as GlenOak’s leading scorer with 1,405 career points and was recognized as the Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year in 2008–09. His commitment extended to his academic pursuits, eventually leading him to Lehigh University.
At Lehigh University, McCollum played four seasons for the Mountain Hawks, quickly making an impact as a freshman in 2009–10. He averaged 19.1 points and 5 rebounds per game, earning the distinction of being the first player in Patriot League history to be named both Player and Rookie of the Year. He continued to excel, securing the Patriot League Player of the Year title again in 2012 and leading his team to a notable upset victory against the Duke Blue Devils in the 2012 NCAA tournament with a game-high 30 points. Despite being considered a high NBA draft prospect, McCollum chose to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, demonstrating his commitment to education. His collegiate career culminated with him becoming the Patriot League’s all-time leading scorer with 2,361 points.
McCollum transitioned to a professional career after being selected tenth overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2013 NBA draft, making him the first player from Lehigh to enter the NBA. After overcoming an early season foot injury and a stint in the D-League, he made his NBA debut in January 2014. His career saw a significant turning point in the 2015–16 season, where he rose to a starting role and averaged 20.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists, earning him the NBA Most Improved Player Award. He continued to be a key offensive player for the Blazers, consistently averaging over 20 points per game in subsequent seasons. In 2022, McCollum was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans, where he maintained his strong performance, including a career-high 50 points in January 2025. In July 2025, he was traded to the Washington Wizards.
