Dr. Tyler Jean completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, between 2011 and 2015. During this time, he also competed as a Division I intercollegiate swimmer in the PAC-12 conference, managing a full course load and maintaining a competitive GPA. He was recognized with the PAC-12 All-Academic Second Team award in his final two years. His early career included working as a Laboratory Assistant I at the Neuroscience Research Institute, UCSB, from August 2015 to August 2016, where he prepared, maintained, and analyzed human embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, and retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells, investigating genetic risk factors for age-related macular degeneration. Concurrently, from September 2015 to June 2016, he served as a Teaching Assistant at Exercise and Sports Studies, UCSB, where he managed a class of over 400 students in Nutrition for Health and Disease, prepared lecture materials, and conducted review sessions.
From June 2014 to April 2017, Dr. Jean worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator I at the William Sansum Diabetes Center in Santa Barbara, CA. In this role, he was a member of a team developing an Artificial Pancreas System for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes. He coordinated multiple NIH and JDRF-funded studies, recruited patients, trained support staff in clinical techniques, completed FDA-approved clinical studies, and provided insights into Type 1 Diabetes. Following this, he pursued a Doctorate’s Degree in Naturopathic Medicine at the National University of Natural Medicine, which he completed between 2017 and 2021.
Today, Dr. Jean operates as a functional medicine doctor and entrepreneur, focusing on holistic health, human performance, and identifying root causes of health issues. He aims to educate others on the importance of food as medicine and inspire healthier lifestyles. He manages an online platform, @functional.foods, where he provides recipes, educational content, and brand recommendations. His professional endeavors also include developing self-paced courses, e-books, and programs centered on functional nutrition, lifestyle practices, and root cause healing. He is also the founder of HealthX, a holistic health membership community focused on empowering individuals to take control of their well-being through a structured framework with educational modules, expert webinars, and advanced lab testing.
