Dr. Wallace J Nichols, named a “Keeper of the Sea” by GQ Magazine and a “water warrior” by AQUATICS International, is a famous marine biologist and an inventive, silo-busting, entrepreneurial scientist. His research interests include ocean and aquatic ecosystems, migratory species, marine protected areas, fisheries management, and plastic pollution, with a focus on generating new action networks and unique interdisciplanary solutions, sometimes incorporating so-called adversaries. He works with leaders in industry, government, non-profits, and academia to encourage a deeper connection with nature and innovative solutions to critical concerns ranging from fresh water supplies to enhanced hospice care for our elderly population.
Dr. Nichols utilizes water, wonder, wellness, and wildlife to help people reconnect with themselves, others, and the environment in a more creative and regenerative way. He works hard and creatively to convey a fresh story about water that the rest of the world may learn from.
Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama presented Dr. Nichols with the Champion of Change Award during the World Oceans Festival on Governor’s Island in New York in 2017. Nichols’ abilities and ingenuity as a field research scientist, government consultant, founder and director of a number of businesses and charity organizations, teacher, mentor, parent, and advisor all contribute to his objective of creating a more diverse, inclusive, and innovative blue movement. He co-mentors a devoted group of foreign graduate students and serves as an advisor to several non-profit boards and committees as part of his commitment to building a more innovative, stronger, current, and connected environmental community.
