Dricus du Plessis was born on January 14, 1994, in Welkom, Free State, South Africa. His martial arts journey began at a young age, starting judo at five, wrestling at twelve, and kickboxing at fourteen. In 2012, at the age of 17, du Plessis achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first South African to win a gold medal at the WAKO World Championships in K-1 style kickboxing. He later transitioned to mixed martial arts, making his professional debut in 2013, after recognizing the greater career potential in MMA. He briefly attended the University of Pretoria, studying agricultural economics, but ultimately chose to leave to pursue his fighting career full-time.
Du Plessis built a notable career in regional promotions before joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He was a two-division champion in the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC), holding both the Welterweight and Middleweight titles. In 2018, he also captured the Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (KSW) Welterweight Championship, defeating Roberto Soldić, before losing the title in a rematch later that year. His entry into the UFC in 2020 marked a new chapter, where he quickly made an impact with his aggressive fighting style.
His UFC career progressed with notable victories, leading to a title shot. On January 20, 2024, at UFC 297, Dricus du Plessis defeated Sean Strickland via split decision to become the UFC Middleweight Champion, making history as the first South African to win a UFC championship. He successfully defended his title twice against Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland in rematches, but ultimately lost the championship to Khamzat Chimaev on August 16, 2025, at UFC 319. His career record stands at 23 wins and 3 losses, with a fighting style characterized by constant forward pressure, high striking volume, and effective grappling.
