Born in Paris on August 24, 1990, to a Polish father and an Australian mother of Irish descent, both of whom were ballet dancers, Elizabeth Debicki moved to Melbourne, Australia, at the age of five. She initially pursued ballet but transitioned to theater, ultimately graduating from the University of Melbourne’s Victorian College of the Arts in 2010 with a degree in drama. In 2009, she received a Richard Pratt Bursary for outstanding acting students. Her early career saw her make her feature film debut in the 2011 Australian comedy “A Few Best Men” as a secretary.
Debicki’s breakthrough came with her role as Jordan Baker in Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film adaptation of “The Great Gatsby,” a performance that earned her an AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. This was followed by significant stage work, notably playing Madame in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of “The Maids” from 2013 to 2014, for which she won the best newcomer award at the Sydney Theatre Awards. She gained further recognition with roles in major films such as Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (2015) and diverse TV projects like “The Kettering Incident” (2016) and the critically acclaimed miniseries “The Night Manager” (2016). In 2017, she took on the role of Ayesha in Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” reprising the role in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in 2023.
Her career continued to ascend with notable performances in films like Steve McQueen’s “Widows” (2018), where she received significant critical praise, and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” (2020). A significant milestone arrived with her portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales, in the final two seasons of the Netflix series “The Crown” (2022–2023). This role garnered her numerous accolades, including a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In 2025, she returned to the stage, performing opposite Ewan McGregor in “My Master Builder” at Wyndham’s Theatre.
