Howard Michael Mandel II was born in Toronto, Ontario, on November 29, 1955. His career in entertainment began by chance during a vacation to Los Angeles, California, when he performed at an amateur night at The Comedy Store. A producer from the syndicated comedy game show “Make Me Laugh” (1979) saw his act and booked him for appearances, marking the beginning of his television career. This early exposure led to opening for David Letterman, a CBS comedy special in 1980, and a role in the film “Gas” (1981). Mandel also became one of the original “VeeJays” on Nickelodeon’s music video series “PopClips.”
Mandel gained national recognition in the United States with his role as Dr. Wayne Fiscus in the medical drama “St. Elsewhere” (1982-1988). During this period, he also ventured into film, providing the voice for Gizmo in the successful film “Gremlins” (1984) and its sequel “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” (1990). His affinity for children’s entertainment led him to create and executive produce the Emmy-nominated animated series “Bobby’s World” (1990–1998), where he also voiced the title character and his father. The 1990s saw Mandel exploring various television projects, including his own talk show, “The Howie Mandel Show” (1998), alongside numerous guest appearances and comedy specials.
A significant turning point in Mandel’s career came in 2005 when he became the host of the American version of the game show “Deal or No Deal.” The show’s popularity cemented his status as a prominent television host. In 2010, he joined “America’s Got Talent” as a judge, a role he has held for multiple seasons, spanning over a decade. He also hosts “Canada’s Got Talent” since 2022. Mandel has publicly shared his experiences with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), becoming an advocate for mental health awareness and publishing his autobiography, “Here’s the Deal: Don’t Touch Me.” In recent years, he has hosted “Howie Mandel Does Stuff Podcast” (2021-present) with his daughter, and “Bullsh*t: The Game Show” (2022) for Netflix.
