About

Emily Maitlis, born on September 6, 1970, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, is a Canadian-born British journalist. Her early professional aspirations leaned towards theatre direction, but she ultimately pursued a career in broadcasting. Before her extensive tenure at the BBC, Maitlis spent six years in Hong Kong working for TVB News and NBC Asia, where she was based. During this period, she worked as a business reporter, producing documentaries and presenting, notably covering the collapse of the “tiger economies” in 1997 and the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong with Jon Snow for Channel 4. Upon returning to the UK, she joined Sky News as a business correspondent before moving to BBC London News in 2001, marking a significant step in her career.

Maitlis’s career with the BBC began in 2005, where she quickly became a prominent figure. She was a regular presenter on the BBC News Channel for a decade, from 2006 to 2016, and also presented “BBC Breakfast.” From May 2006 to July 2007, she hosted “STORYFix” on BBC News, offering a light-hearted perspective on the week’s news. A major milestone in her BBC career was presenting the US 2012 election coverage on BBC One and the BBC News Channel alongside David Dimbleby. She became a leading presenter of “Newsnight” on BBC Two, joining as a relief presenter in 2006 and ascending to lead anchor following Evan Davis’s departure in 2018. In 2019, she published “Airhead: The Imperfect Art of Making News,” detailing the production of television news.

Her interview with Prince Andrew in November 2019, concerning his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, was a pivotal moment, broadcast on “Newsnight.” This interview garnered widespread attention and critical acclaim, leading to Prince Andrew’s resignation from royal duties. The interview earned her “Interview of the Year” and “Scoop of the Year” awards at the 2020 RTS Television Journalism Awards. Post-BBC, in 2022, Maitlis joined Global and launched “The News Agents” podcast with Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall, which quickly became a top-ranking podcast. She has also co-hosted Channel 4’s general election coverage for 2024, continuing her impactful career in broadcast journalism.
