Fabio Cannavaro was born on September 13, 1973, in Naples, Italy. He began his football career at age 11, joining the junior team for SSC Napoli. By 1993, he progressed to Napoli’s first team, competing at the highest level of Italian professional soccer for two years. His early career at Napoli was marked by consistent performance, demonstrating his defensive capabilities. Despite his promising start, Napoli’s financial situation led to his transfer to Parma AC in 1995. At Parma, Cannavaro quickly became a key player, contributing to the team’s success with multiple trophies.
His tenure at Parma, from 1995 to 2002, saw him win two Italian cups, the Union of European Football Associations Cup, and the Italian Super Cup. He was named captain of the Parma team in 2001. In 2002, he moved to Inter Milan, where he played for two seasons before joining Juventus in Turin in 2004. The most significant year of his playing career was 2006, when he captained the Italian national team to a World Cup victory. Following this achievement, he was named Best Italian Player and Best Defender by the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio, and subsequently became the first defender to receive the FIFA World Player of the Year award. He also earned the European Footballer of the Year award in 2006, becoming one of only three defenders to achieve this honor. After a storied playing career with clubs such as Real Madrid and Al-Ahli, Cannavaro retired from professional play in 2011.
Post-retirement, Cannavaro transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach for Al-Ahli in 2013–14 and went on to manage several clubs, including China’s Guangzhou Evergrande and Benevento in Italy’s Serie B. In April 2024, he took on the role of head coach for Serie A club Udinese, successfully guiding them away from the relegation zone. In December 2024, he was appointed manager of Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb. His impact in management was recognized when he was appointed head coach of the Uzbekistan national team in October 2025, ahead of their debut World Cup appearance.
