Petrolhead Fernando Alonso Díaz is a professional racing driver, who currently competes in Formula 1 for Alpine. An incredibly talented driver, he has won numerous titles, including the series’ World Drivers’ Championship in 2005 and 2006, the 24 Hours Le Mans twice in 2018 and 2019, the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2018-19, and the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2019. He has twice been inducted into the FIA Hall of Fame, and is due to join Aston Martin for the 2023 season.
Born and raised in Oviedo, Spain, Alonso began racing go-karts at the age of three. He started competing in local, national, and world championships, and had progressed to car racing by the time he was 17. He made his Formula 1 debut with Minardi in 2001, then joined Renault as a test driver for the 2002 season. He was promoted to a racing seat the following year, going on to win two drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006, becoming the youngest pole-sitter, the youngest race winner, the youngest world champion, and the youngest 2x champion in the sport’s history at the time. He had huge success racing for McLaren, Renault, and Ferrari between 2007 and 2018. He then took a two year sabbatical, and returned to F1 in 2021 with Alpine, scoring his first podium win in seven years at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix. He is due to move to Aston Martin for the 2023 season.
