About

Frank Robinson was born on August 31, 1935, in Beaumont, Texas. He spent his early life in Oakland, California, where he attended McClymonds High School. During his high school years, he was a talented athlete, playing basketball alongside Bill Russell and baseball with future major league players Vada Pinson and Curt Flood. His professional baseball career began in 1953 when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds. Robinson quickly made an impact, debuting in Major League Baseball in 1956 at the age of 20. He tied the rookie home run record with 38 in his first season and earned the National League Rookie of the Year Award.

His playing career spanned 21 seasons, during which he played for five different teams. A pivotal moment in his career was his trade to the Baltimore Orioles in 1965, where he achieved the Triple Crown in 1966, leading the American League in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in. He also became the first player to win the MVP award in both the National and American Leagues. Robinson led the Orioles to two World Series titles in 1966 and 1970, earning the World Series MVP in 1966. His 586 career home runs ranked fourth in major league history upon his retirement.

Beyond his playing achievements, Robinson made history in 1975 by becoming the first African American manager in Major League Baseball, serving as a player-manager for the Cleveland Indians. He went on to manage the San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, and Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals. In 1989, he was recognized as the American League Manager of the Year. Throughout his post-playing career, he held various executive positions with Major League Baseball, including Executive Vice President of Baseball Development and Senior Advisor to the Commissioner, continuing to influence the sport at a high level until his passing in 2019.
