Freddy Rodriguez was born on January 17, 1975, in Chicago, Illinois. He developed an interest in acting as a way to navigate a challenging urban environment, becoming involved with the Whirlwind Performance Company, an experimental program for at-risk youth. This led to a scholarship to the Pulaski International School of Chicago and participation in student productions at Lincoln Park High School, where he also honed skills as a dancer and hip-hop choreographer. After graduating, Rodriguez moved to Los Angeles in 1994, quickly securing roles that initiated his acting career. His early film credits include “A Walk in the Clouds” (1995) and “Dead Presidents” (1995).
Rodriguez gained significant recognition for his role as Federico Diaz on the acclaimed HBO series “Six Feet Under,” which ran from 2001 to 2005. This role earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series. During this period, he also appeared in films such as “Havoc” (2005), “Dreamer” (2005), “Poseidon” (2006), “Lady in the Water” (2006), and a leading role in “Harsh Times” (2005). He further expanded his repertoire with a notable role as El Wray in Robert Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror” (2007) and as Gustavo Brambila in “Bottle Shock” (2008).
His television career continued with recurring roles, including Gio Rossi on “Ugly Betty” (2007–2010) and Dr. Michael Ragosa on “The Night Shift” (2014–2015).
