Gautam Gambhir was born on October 14, 1981, in New Delhi, India. He began his journey in cricket at the age of 10 and was later selected for the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore in 2000. Rising through the ranks, Gambhir made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India against Bangladesh in 2003, followed by his Test debut against Australia in 2004. A left-handed opening batsman, he consistently proved his capabilities on the international stage. In 2007, he played a crucial role in India’s victory at the inaugural ICC World Twenty20, notably scoring 75 runs in the final against Pakistan. His significant contribution continued into the 2011 Cricket World Cup, where he scored 97 runs in the final, helping India secure the title. These performances established him as a key player in India’s limited-overs success and showcased his ability to perform under pressure on a global stage.
Gambhir’s leadership extended beyond international matches to the Indian Premier League (IPL). He captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, transforming the team into a formidable force. His ability to lead and strategize was evident in these victories. After retiring from all forms of cricket in December 2018, Gambhir transitioned into politics, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in March 2019. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for the East Delhi constituency in the 17th Lok Sabha, serving from 2019 to 2024. During this period, he also founded the Gautam Gambhir Foundation in 2014, engaging in philanthropic efforts focused on community welfare and supporting children of paramilitary martyrs. In 2019, he received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, recognizing his contributions to both sports and public service.
In a recent career shift, Gambhir returned to cricket in a coaching capacity. He served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL during 2022 and 2023 seasons. His return to the Kolkata Knight Riders as a mentor for the 2024 IPL season culminated in another championship victory for the team. In July 2024, Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team, a role he is set to hold for three years until the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup. Under his coaching, India won the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, and the 2025 Asia Cup, marking significant achievements in his coaching tenure. His post-playing career demonstrates a continued dedication to cricket and public life, marked by impactful leadership and strategic involvement.
