George Brett

George Howard Brett was born on May 15, 1953, in Glen Dale, West Virginia. The youngest of four athletic brothers, George grew up in El Segundo, California, and pursued his dream of playing professional baseball. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the 1971 Major League Baseball draft. Brett began his career as a shortstop but quickly transitioned to third base, a position where his powerful throwing arm was an asset. His early professional journey included stops with the Billings Mustangs, San Jose Bees, and Omaha Royals before he made his Major League debut with the Kansas City Royals in 1973.

Brett’s career with the Kansas City Royals spanned 21 seasons, establishing him as one of baseball’s most consistent and productive hitters. He achieved numerous milestones, including three American League batting titles in three different decades (1976, 1980, 1990), an achievement unique in MLB history. He was named the American League MVP in 1980, a season where he famously pursued a .400 batting average, finishing with .390. Brett led the Royals to their first World Series championship in 1985, earning the ALCS MVP award that year. His career was marked by dedication and a competitive spirit, evident in memorable moments like the ‘Pine Tar Incident’ in 1983 and his consistent performance, accumulating over 3,000 hits.

After retiring in 1993, Brett remained actively involved in baseball and community initiatives. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 on his first year of eligibility, reflecting his significant impact on the sport. His number 5 was retired by the Royals, an honor shared by few.
