Leonard Cornilus Floyd was born on September 8, 1992, in Chauncey, Georgia. He attended Dodge County High School, where he excelled in both football as a defensive end and tight end, and track and field, notably winning the shot put event at the 2011 Region 3AA Meet. After high school, Floyd spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy to meet NCAA academic requirements before committing to the University of Georgia. During his college career at Georgia from 2013 to 2015, Floyd made a significant impact, starting eight of 13 games as a true freshman with 55 tackles and 6.5 sacks. He continued to perform strongly in his sophomore and junior years, accumulating 55 tackles, six sacks, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in 2014, and 72 combined tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2015. His consistent performance led him to declare for the NFL Draft after his junior year.
Floyd was selected by the Chicago Bears as the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he recorded 33 combined tackles, seven sacks, a forced fumble, and a defensive touchdown in 12 games, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. He continued his tenure with the Bears until 2019, consistently contributing to their defense with tackles and sacks. In 2020, Floyd joined the Los Angeles Rams, where he had a career-high 10.5 sacks in his first season. He signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension with the Rams in 2021 and was a key member of the team that won Super Bowl LVI. During the Super Bowl, he recorded five tackles and one sack against the Cincinnati Bengals.
After his successful period with the Rams, Floyd was released in 2023 and signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills, where he continued to demonstrate his pass-rushing capabilities with 10.5 sacks. In 2024, he moved to the San Francisco 49ers on a two-year, $20 million contract, recording 8.5 sacks in 17 games before being released in March 2025. He then signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons in March 2025, adding an experienced defensive presence to his hometown team.
