Brazilian welterweight mixed martial artist Gilbert Burns competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship as well as at international competitions.
Burns competes in both the UFC promotion and in worldwide competitions as a grappler. His first international appearance came in 2006 at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, winning a silver medal and repeating the performance at the 2009 version of the competition. The following year he had one of his best seasons to date, reaching the semifinals of the European Open and taking home gold medals at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship and the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup. His winning streak continued with yet another gold medal at the 2011 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, before Burns decided to turn his attention to mixed martial arts. He was selected as the head grappling coach for Team Vitor in The Ultimate Fighter Brazil in 2012 and made his UFC fighting debut in 2014. He won Performance of the Night two bouts running on his first ever UFC matches, setting the bar high and making an impression as an up and coming fighter on the scene. Burns has continued to put in great performances ever since, only losing 4 fights out of his 24 professional bouts.
Most recently, Burns has won two more Performance of the Night awards and signed a new contract with the UFC at the beginning of 2020. He is currently ranked as number 2 in the UFC welterweight rankings and continues to be one of the foremost fighters in the game.
