Giuseppe Rossi was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, on February 1, 1987, to Italian immigrant parents. His early immersion in soccer, coached by his father, led him to Italy at age 12 to join Parma’s youth team. His talent was quickly recognized, and by 17, Manchester United acquired his contract. He made his first-team debut for Manchester United in November 2004 during a League Cup match and scored his first Premier League goal in October 2005 against Sunderland. During the 2006-2007 season, Rossi gained further first-team experience through loan spells at Newcastle United and his former club Parma, where he scored 9 goals in 19 league appearances. Rossi’s early career showcased his potential as a skilled forward with a natural goal-scoring ability.
In 2007, Rossi moved to Villarreal, where he spent five and a half seasons, becoming a pivotal player. His tenure at Villarreal was marked by significant success, particularly the 2010-2011 season where he scored 32 goals across all competitions, helping the club secure a fourth-place finish in La Liga and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League. He became Villarreal’s all-time top scorer before his record was surpassed in 2021. Rossi also represented Italy internationally, making 30 appearances and scoring 7 goals between 2008 and 2014. He notably won the Golden Boot at the 2008 Summer Olympics, scoring four goals. Despite facing multiple severe knee injuries throughout his career, Rossi continued to play for clubs such as Fiorentina, Levante, Celta Vigo, Genoa, Real Salt Lake, and SPAL.
Following his retirement from professional play in 2023, Rossi transitioned into new roles within the soccer world. In September 2021, he began working as a sports commentator for ‘Calcio e Cappuccino’ on CBS Sports Network and Paramount+. Demonstrating his commitment to developing future talent, Rossi was appointed Vice Chairman and Head of Soccer for North Jersey Pro Soccer in July 2025, an expansion team set to become the New York Cosmos in USL League One. This role allows him to contribute to soccer development in his native New Jersey, carrying on his father’s legacy as a coach and mentor.
