Born on September 27, 1992, in Basel, Switzerland, to an ethnic Albanian family, Granit Xhaka began his football journey at a young age. He started his youth career with Concordia Basel before moving to the FC Basel youth academy in late 2002. During his time in Basel’s youth system, he achieved significant success, including winning the U-15 Swiss Championship in 2006–07 and the U-16 Swiss Championship in 2007–08, both with impressive records. He advanced through the ranks, joining Basel’s U-21 squad and eventually making his first-team debut in 2010. With FC Basel, Xhaka secured two Swiss Super League titles in 2010–11 and 2011–12, and the Swiss Cup in 2011–12, playing a foundational role in the team’s domestic dominance.
In 2012, Xhaka transitioned to German football, signing a five-year deal with Borussia Mönchengladbach. Over four seasons, he developed a reputation as a technically skilled midfielder and a natural leader, frequently captaining the team. He made 108 league appearances, contributing to the club’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League twice. His consistent performances earned him a place in the Bundesliga’s team of the season in 2014–15. In 2016, Xhaka moved to Arsenal in the Premier League for approximately £30 million. During his seven years with Arsenal, he made nearly 300 appearances, serving as club captain and winning two FA Cups (2016–17, 2019–20) and two FA Community Shields (2017, 2020), solidifying his presence in English football.
In 2023, Xhaka returned to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, signing a five-year contract. In his debut season, he played a crucial role in the club’s historic achievement of winning their first-ever Bundesliga title (2023–24) and the DFB-Pokal (2023–24), securing an invincible double season. His influence on the field continued as he joined newly promoted Premier League side Sunderland in July 2025 for an initial fee of £13 million. He was immediately named Sunderland’s captain for the 2025–26 season, marking another significant leadership role in his career. Internationally, Xhaka has been a cornerstone of the Switzerland national team since his senior debut in 2011, becoming the nation’s record appearance holder with 141 caps. He has represented Switzerland in multiple FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships, including captaining the team in Euro 2024 where he was named Man of the Match in their opening game.
