Greg Velasco, born on September 23, 1993, in Trenton, New Jersey, began his competitive sports career in football, playing at Rider University. Standing at 6’2″ and weighing around 263 lbs, Velasco later shifted his focus to mixed martial arts. He trains at Bayshore Jiu-Jitsu and The Institute, competing in the Heavyweight division. Velasco made his professional MMA debut in 2021 and quickly established himself as a prominent figure in regional promotions, particularly with Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC).
Velasco’s early professional career with CFFC showcased his finishing abilities, securing victories through TKO and submission. Key wins include a TKO against Halston Williams in May 2021 and a submission (rear-naked choke) against Willie Tarpley in December 2021. He continued his momentum in 2022 by defeating Edwin Smart via submission (heel hook) in April. His consistent performance led to him challenging for and winning the Cage Fury FC Heavyweight Championship by defeating Kevin Sears via unanimous decision in October 2022. This period marked a significant turning point, demonstrating his potential by capturing a championship title early in his career. In March 2023, he successfully defended his title against Ronald Coleman with a TKO victory.
In September 2023, Velasco participated in Dana White’s Contender Series, facing Shamil Gaziev for a potential UFC contract, where he experienced a submission loss. Following this, he returned to CFFC in April 2024, where he lost his Heavyweight Championship to Bailey Schoenfelder via TKO. Throughout his career, Velasco has built a reputation for his aggressive fighting style, with 50% of his wins coming by KO/TKO and 33% by submission, reflecting his commitment to finishing fights.
