Gretchen Whitmer

Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971, in Lansing, Michigan. Her parents, both attorneys, instilled in her an early understanding of public service. She pursued higher education at Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in communication in 1993 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1998, graduating magna cum laude. After law school, she began her career in private practice at Dickinson Wright before her entry into politics.

Whitmer’s political journey began in 2000, when she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. She served multiple terms, focusing on education and healthcare reform. In 2006, she transitioned to the Michigan Senate through a special election, where she became the first woman to lead a party caucus from 2011 to 2015. A notable moment from her legislative career was a 2013 floor speech where she spoke about her experience as a sexual assault survivor during a debate on abortion rights, gaining national attention. Following her tenure in the Senate, she served as the prosecuting attorney of Ingham County for six months in 2016.

In 2018, Whitmer was elected as the 49th Governor of Michigan, campaigning on pledges to improve the state’s infrastructure. She was reelected in 2022 with a significant margin. As governor, she has prioritized initiatives such as fixing roads, expanding healthcare coverage, strengthening the economy through job creation and clean energy investments, and advocating for educational reforms like tuition-free community college programs. Her leadership during challenging periods, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, brought her increased national recognition, including delivering the Democratic response to the 2020 State of the Union Address.
