United States Chris Krebs is a recognized expert in cybersecurity and risk management, serving as the first Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and later co-founding a cybersecurity consultancy.
Chris Krebs served as the Director for Cybersecurity Policy at Microsoft, leading the company's U.S. policy work on cybersecurity and technology issues prior to his roles at DHS.
After leaving CISA, Chris Krebs's newly formed cybersecurity consultancy, Krebs Stamos Group, was tapped by SolarWinds to help investigate a significant hack and review its security practices.
Krebs Stamos Group, co-founded by Chris Krebs, was acquired by SentinelOne in late 2023. Following the acquisition, Krebs became SentinelOne's Chief Intelligence and Public Policy Officer.
In October 2022, Chris Krebs joined the Council for Responsible Social Media, a project launched by Issue One, to address the negative impacts of social media in the United States.
Christopher Cox Krebs was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1977. He pursued his higher education at the University of Virginia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in environmental sciences in 1999. Subsequently, he obtained a Juris Doctor from the George Mason University School of Law in 2007. His early career involved advising on cybersecurity and risk management for both industry and government clients, and he also served as Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Protection at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Krebs’s career progressed into key roles within the U.S. government and the private sector. Before rejoining DHS, he was the Director for Cybersecurity Policy for Microsoft, where he led U.S. policy efforts on cybersecurity and technology issues. In March 2017, he returned to DHS as Senior Counselor to the Secretary, advising on critical infrastructure and national resilience. He was appointed Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Protection in August 2017 and later confirmed as the Under Secretary for the National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) on June 15, 2018. A significant turning point came in November 2018 when the NPPD was reorganized into the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and Krebs was appointed as its first Director. In this role, he oversaw efforts to defend civilian networks, secure federal facilities, and manage systemic risk to national critical functions, collaborating with stakeholders to enhance the nation’s cyber and physical infrastructure security.
Following his tenure at CISA, Krebs transitioned back to the private sector. In early 2021, he co-founded Krebs Stamos Group, a cybersecurity consultancy, which promptly secured SolarWinds as a client to assist with their cybersecurity recovery. The Krebs Stamos Group was later acquired by SentinelOne in late 2023, where Krebs became the company’s Chief Intelligence and Public Policy Officer. He resigned from SentinelOne in April 2025. In October 2022, Krebs also joined the Council for Responsible Social Media, a project by Issue One, focused on addressing the impacts of social media.
