Griffin Matthews

Griffin Matthews was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama, where he earned a B.F.A. in musical theater. Matthews co-founded UgandaProject in 2005, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the education of orphaned children in Uganda. His experiences volunteering in Uganda inspired him to co-write the musical “Witness Uganda” with Matt Gould, which was later retitled “Invisible Thread.” This work garnered significant recognition, winning the Richard Rodgers Awards for Musical Theatre in both 2012 and 2014.

Matthews has established himself as an actor in various television series. His notable roles include Shane Evans in “The Flight Attendant” (2020–2022), D’Unte in “Dear White People” (2019), and Luke Jacobson in the Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” (2022). He is also slated to appear as Teddy Lockwood in “You” (2025) and Bayard Rustin in “Genius” (2024). In addition to his acting career, Matthews maintains an active presence in theater, including Off-Broadway productions like “Best of Both Worlds” and various regional shows.

His career also extends into writing and directing, with several staged readings and a commission from Center Theatre Group for a new musical, “The Family Project.” Matthews has also spoken publicly on issues of institutionalized racism within the American theater. He married composer and writer Matt Gould in 2017, and together they adopted two sons in August 2022.
