Helena Morrissey, born Helena Louise Atkins on March 22, 1966, in Bowdon, Cheshire, England, began her career in finance at Schroders, working on bond desks in New York and London. She later joined Newton Investment Management in the early 1990s as a fixed income fund manager. Her tenure at Newton saw her rise to chief executive, a position she held for 15 years from 2001 to 2016. During this period, Newton Investment Management grew to manage £47 billion of assets by the end of 2015. After stepping down as CEO, she served as non-executive chairman in 2016. Her work at Newton established her as a significant figure in financial management.
Beyond her corporate leadership, Helena Morrissey has been a leading voice for inclusion and diversity. In 2010, she founded the 30% Club, an initiative aimed at increasing female representation on company boards. Under her leadership, the percentage of women on FTSE350 boards improved from under 10% to nearly 40%. The 30% Club has since expanded globally, with twenty branches worldwide. She also chairs the Diversity Project, which focuses on improving diversity across all aspects of the investment industry. In recognition of her services to diversity in financial services, she was appointed a Dame in 2017. She has served as Chair of the Investment Association from 2014 to 2017, influencing the UK’s investment landscape.
Morrissey continued her career progression by joining Legal & General Investment Management in May 2017. In 2020, she entered the House of Lords as Baroness Morrissey, sitting as a Conservative peer and making her maiden speech in September 2020. She joined the board of AJ Bell in July 2021, and became chair in January 2022, though she later resigned in September 2022. She currently chairs the boards of Fidelis Insurance Holdings, Altum Group, and Barnett Waddingham.
