Heo Sung-tae was born on October 20, 1977, in Busan, South Korea. He pursued higher education at Pusan National University, where he specialized in Russian language. Before his acting career, Heo gained professional experience in the corporate sector, initially working in sales for LG Corporation in the Russian market. Subsequently, he transitioned to the planning and coordination department of a shipbuilding company, demonstrating a diverse professional background prior to entering the entertainment industry.
Heo Sung-tae commenced his acting career in 2011, making his debut after participating in SBS’s talent show, ‘Miraculous Audition’. His career began to gain significant momentum with his role as Ha Il-soo in the 2016 period thriller film ‘The Age of Shadows’, which brought him domestic recognition. He continued to build his filmography with notable roles in productions such as ‘The Fortress’ (2017), where he learned the Manchu language for his character Yong Gol-dae, and ‘The Outlaws’ (2017), where he played the character Viper. Heo’s consistent work in supporting roles established him as a reliable character actor in the South Korean film industry.
The actor achieved international prominence with his portrayal of the gangster Jang Deok-su in the 2021 Netflix original series ‘Squid Game’. This role significantly elevated his global profile. Following this breakthrough, he has maintained a busy schedule, starring in various television series and films. His recent projects include roles in the TV series ‘Crash’ (2024) as Jeong Chae-man and the upcoming JTBC series ‘Good Boy’ (2025) as Ko Man-sik, alongside Park Bo-gum, further solidifying his career trajectory and diverse acting capabilities.
