Herman Li

Herman Li was born on October 3, 1976, in Hong Kong. He later moved to France and then to England during his teenage years. He is fluent in English, French, and Cantonese. In 1999, Li co-founded the band DragonForce with Sam Totman, where he serves as a lead guitarist, producer, and songwriter. Prior to DragonForce, Li was a member of the black metal band Demoniac, also alongside Totman. His musical style draws from rock, various metal subgenres, and video game music, often incorporating sounds from retro arcade and PC games into his guitar playing.

Li’s playing style is characterized by fast descending and ascending legato and staccato licks, exotic scale runs, and a significant use of the harmonic minor and Phrygian dominant scales. He employs extensive whammy bar techniques, rapid sweep picking arpeggios, alternate picking, and two-handed tapping. Li is left-handed but plays the guitar right-handed. He has cited Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Tony MacAlpine as significant influences on his guitar style.

Over his career, Li has achieved various accolades, including RIAA Certified Platinum Single for “Through the Fire and Flames” and RIAA Certified Gold Record for “Inhuman Rampage.” He was recognized as the Best Shredder at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards in 2005 and 2009. His work, particularly the twin guitar solos in “Through the Fire and Flames” with Sam Totman, has been featured in several video games, including “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock,” “Guitar Hero Smash Hits,” “Guitar Hero Live,” and “Rock Band 3.” In 2025, PRS Guitars released a limited-edition signature model for Li, the “Chleo,” featuring his Fishman Fluence Signature Series Omniforce pickups.
