About

James Heath-Clark, known professionally as Honey Davenport, was born on August 13, 1985, in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His early life was shaped by experiences with gun violence and racism, which later inspired his artistic focus on social justice themes. He began writing poetry at age 10 and songs at 13, channeling his experiences into his creative expression. After moving to New York City at 17 to study musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, Heath-Clark’s career began with a role in the Broadway national tour of “Hairspray.” This experience led him to backup dancing for Peppermint for four years and subsequently forming his own dance group, The Hunties, in 2008. A fortuitous encounter with RuPaul led to his drag name, “Honey,” with the surname “Davenport” adopted from his drag mother, Lady Deja Davenport, and mentorship from Sahara Davenport and Manila Luzon.

Honey Davenport quickly became a prominent figure in the New York City nightlife scene. Between 2013 and 2018, she amassed 18 drag pageant titles, including the national crown of Miss’d America in 2015. Simultaneously, she fronted the synth-pop band Electrohoney, releasing an eponymous album in 2013 and starring in the live rock opera “The Electric Highway.” Davenport also performed in two off-Broadway shows, “The Orion Experience” in 2013 and a leading role in “Trinkets” from 2017 to 2018. Her career reached a wider audience as a contestant on season 11 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in 2019, where she placed 13th. While on the show, she released her visual EP, “Raw and Unfiltered,” with singles and music videos that showcased looks intended for later episodes.

Following “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Davenport embarked on solo musical tours, launched web series like “Da Fuq,” and continued her activism. In 2020, she co-released “Draw the Blood” with Aja, a single and music video addressing bystander inaction against racism, marking her directorial debut. In 2023, she co-starred in the feature film “God Save the Queens” and released the single “Mighty Legendary.” Her work consistently emphasizes social commentary, particularly on racial equality, gun control, and transgender rights. This commitment extends to her business ventures, including Honey’s Hose, an inclusive hosiery brand. She has also served as a guest panelist on VH1’s “Black Girl Beauty” and has upcoming projects such as a perfume line (Pollen 8), a makeup line (Bee Yourself), and a podcast with Jasmine Masters.
