Hope Powell

Born on December 8, 1966, in Lewisham, Hope Patricia Powell began her football career at a young age, joining Millwall Lionesses at 11 years old. She made her debut for the England national team in 1983 at the age of 16, playing as an attacking midfielder. Powell accumulated 72 caps for England, scoring 17 goals, and notably participated in England’s first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in 1995. During her club career, she played in four FA Cup finals, winning one with Millwall Lionesses in 1991 and achieving a League and FA Cup double with Croydon in 1996 as captain.

In 1998, Powell made a significant transition into coaching, becoming the first-ever full-time national coach of the England women’s team, a position she held until 2013. Her tenure as head coach established a record 162 games in charge for the national team, a milestone unsurpassed by any England national team coach. Under her leadership, England reached the final of the UEFA Women’s Championship in 2009 and the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in both 2007 and 2011. She also became the first woman to earn the UEFA Pro Licence in 2003, the highest coaching qualification available. Powell also managed the Great Britain women’s Olympic football team during the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Beyond her coaching achievements, Powell has been a driving force in the professionalization of the women’s game, including her involvement with the Women’s Super League. Her contributions to football have been recognized with numerous accolades, including an OBE in 2002 and a CBE in 2010. After her role with the national team, she managed Brighton & Hove Albion in the WSL from 2017 to 2022. In 2023, she took on the role of Women’s Technical Director at Birmingham City, continuing to influence the growth and development of women’s football in England.
