Huma Abedin was born on July 28, 1975, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At the age of two, she moved with her family to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where she was raised. Her parents, Syed Zainul Abedin and Saleha Mahmood Abedin, were both professors. She returned to the United States for college, attending George Washington University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism with a minor in political science. Her career in public service began in 1996 as an intern in First Lady Hillary Clinton’s office. This foundational experience marked the beginning of a long and significant professional relationship with Hillary Clinton, spanning over two decades in various capacities.
From 2009 to 2012, Abedin served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Hillary Clinton at the State Department. Following this role, she transitioned to a special government employee status, which allowed her to work as a consultant for private clients while continuing to advise the Secretary of State. During this period, she worked with firms like Teneo and as a paid consultant to the Clinton Foundation. In 2015, she became the vice-chairperson for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, playing a key role in campaign strategy and personnel decisions. Her memoir, “Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds,” published in 2021, provided her platform to share her personal story and experiences in public life, including her upbringing, professional milestones, and personal challenges.
Throughout her career, Abedin has been closely involved in high-level political campaigns and government service, often in critical advisory roles. Her work primarily centered on supporting Hillary Clinton’s various political endeavors, providing strategic advice and serving as a trusted aide.
