About

Alex Apollonov, born on April 28, 1992, is an Australian YouTube personality and comedian. Before establishing his presence on YouTube, Apollonov commenced five separate university degrees but did not complete any of them. He also held over thirteen jobs, being dismissed from eleven of them for various reasons, including workplace rule infractions. His family, Chinese-born Russians, arrived in Australia from Siberia. These early experiences contributed to his unique comedic and observational style.

Apollonov initiated his YouTube career in 2016, co-founding the channel ‘Boy Boy’ with comedian Aleksa Vulović. This channel focused on debunking sensationalist media claims in Australia, utilizing comedy to address social issues such as climate change, colonialism, police violence, and racism. A notable project from this period was ‘The Haircut’ (2017), a documentary-style movie where Apollonov and Vulović traveled to North Korea to investigate claims about mandatory hairstyles, which gained significant media attention. In 2018, Apollonov established his primary channel, ‘I did a thing’, which rapidly surpassed the popularity of ‘Boy Boy’. This channel features Apollonov constructing various custom-designed devices, often with a humorous and politically resonant undertone. By 2020, his channel achieved one million subscribers, earning him the Gold Play Button award.

His work on ‘I did a thing’ has involved diverse projects, such as recreating the Utah monolith in Australia with the comedy group Aunty Donna in 2020, and creating a weaponized robot dog in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022, as a form of political commentary on school shootings. Apollonov’s channel also gained widespread attention in 2022 due to a trademark dispute with Jeremy Clarkson over the phrase “I did a thing.” In May 2022, Apollonov participated in the Creator Clash boxing tournament, winning his match against TheOdd1sOut in the first round. His content frequently incorporates political discussions within seemingly apolitical video titles, a deliberate strategy to engage a broader audience.
