About

Christian Donald Laettner was born on August 17, 1969, in Angola, New York. He pursued his education at Nichols School in Buffalo, New York, where he established himself as a prominent high school basketball player, scoring over 2,000 career points and contributing to two state titles. His collegiate career at Duke University spanned from 1988 to 1992 under coach Mike Krzyzewski. Laettner was a pivotal player for the Duke Blue Devils, leading them to consecutive NCAA national championships in 1991 and 1992. During his senior year in 1992, he earned the National College Player of the Year award. His collegiate achievements include becoming the all-time NCAA Tournament career scoring leader with 407 points and holding records for most free throws made (142) and most games won (21).

Following his successful college career, Laettner was selected as the only collegian for the 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball team, famously known as the “Dream Team,” which secured a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics. He was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 3rd overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft. Laettner’s NBA career lasted 13 seasons, from 1992 to 2005, playing for six different teams. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1993 and was selected as an NBA All-Star in 1997 while playing for the Atlanta Hawks. Over his NBA career, he accumulated 11,121 points, 5,806 rebounds, and 2,224 assists. His professional journey also included roles as an assistant coach for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the NBA Development League and involvement in various business ventures and youth basketball camps.

Laettner’s post-NBA career includes significant involvement in real estate development, often in collaboration with former Duke teammate Brian Davis. He has also committed to philanthropic efforts, having donated substantial amounts to his alma maters, including $1 million to Nichols School for a scholarship fund and gymnasium completion, and $2 million to Duke’s men’s basketball program for athletic scholarships and facility development. He continues to engage with the sport through youth basketball training camps and advisory roles, contributing to the development of young athletes. Laettner’s journey from a highly competitive collegiate athlete to a professional player and later a businessman underscores his enduring commitment to basketball and community involvement.
