Iliza Vie Shlesinger was born on February 22, 1983, in New York City. She was raised in Dallas, Texas, where her family relocated when she was an infant. Shlesinger attended Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, where she studied Spanish and participated in the school’s improvisation team. Her academic journey continued with a year at the University of Kansas, which included a Semester at Sea program, before she transferred to Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, majoring in film. During her time at Emerson, she joined Jimmy’s Traveling All Stars, one of the campus’s sketch comedy groups. After graduating, Shlesinger moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in stand-up comedy, performing with ComedySportz Dallas and becoming a notable member of whiteboy comedy.
Her career gained significant momentum in 2007 when she won Myspace’s “So You Think You’re Funny” contest and was featured as G4 network’s “Myspace Girl of the Week.” A pivotal moment came in 2008 when Shlesinger became the first woman and the youngest winner of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” in its sixth season. Following this achievement, she joined “The Last Comic Standing Tour.” She expanded her reach into television, hosting the syndicated dating show “Excused” from 2011 to 2013 and the TBS game show “Separation Anxiety.” In 2017, she hosted her own late-night talk show, “Truth & Iliza,” on Freeform, which ran for six episodes.
